Hello everyone. I am Atta, writing to you from our little café in Melbourne.
Even though it doesn’t feel like it sometimes, Kai and I are still relatively new to this city. When you arrive somewhere fresh, it can take time to feel truly connected, and to understand what makes a place so beloved by the people who live there.
Through the Attakai cafés in Carlton and Melbourne CBD we have met many kind people, and that has made us feel very loved. But connecting with a new home is not only about the people you meet. It is also about discovering the things that make a place unique and beloved by those who live here.
Markets are one of those things. (´• ω •`) ♡
Why We Love Markets
Markets are bustling and vibrant places filled with some of the best vibes and community experiences the world has to offer. They give you the chance to see the real fruits of people’s labour, sometimes literal fruits, sometimes handmade treasures. It doesn’t matter whether you are shopping for fresh produce, used books, knick-knacks or antiques; you get to feel part of something shared.

They are wonderful for families with children
There is so much to look at, taste and explore. Little ones can watch makers at work, sample something new, or simply enjoy the lively atmosphere. Even when the crowds feel a little big for someone small, the experience is usually worth it.

Markets also help you feel closer to your local community
You chat with growers and makers, hear stories about how things are made, and leave with something that carries a bit of that connection home with you. In Melbourne we are lucky to have so many free communal spaces where people can meet, sell their wares, and share a hot drink or a tasty sando afterwards.
Some Markets We Have Heard About

Winter Night Market
This one runs on Wednesday evenings until late August. People gather around fire pits, enjoy roaming entertainment, and browse vintage fashion, records and specialty shops. Many say the mulled wine and winter comfort food make it feel especially cosy on cooler nights. Entry is free, which makes it easy to drop in.
CRFT*WRK Market
A monthly craft market that continues through to December. Customers mention the beautiful homewares, clothing, gifts and pantry treats such as hot sauce, handcrafted chocolates and artisan jams. It is a lovely place to find something special made by local makers.
Younghusband Market
Held in a converted woolshed in Kensington from mid-August through December. We hear it has a big range of handmade crafts, fashion, homewares and art, plus workshops, music and good food options. It sounds like a lively winter market with plenty to see and do.
Kensington Market
Another local monthly market that runs until mid-December. People describe it as a friendly neighbourhood gathering with unique goodies from local makers, artisan treats, homewares and quirky jewellery. Some enjoy grabbing a coffee first and then wandering across to nearby spots for brunch.
Docklands Waterfront Farmers’ Market
This one takes place on the beautiful waterfront from mid-August to mid-November. Customers love shopping for fresh Victorian produce while listening to live entertainment and enjoying free family activities. It is a calm and open setting with lovely views.
The Southbank Makers Market
A long-running Sunday market along the riverside. It has moved to the Yarra promenade and Southgate. People tell us they find original artwork, fun accessories and all sorts of unique treasures while strolling beside the river.
Melbourne Book Market
For book lovers, this is a favourite. Held at Queen Victoria Market every Saturday and Sunday, it offers thousands of new and pre-loved titles chosen by experienced booksellers, authors and illustrators. Many of our customers say it is the perfect place to stock up for quiet reading days.
